How to buy a new Mac

The top three questions to ask yourself when buying a new Macintosh:

1. Do I want it to be portable?
If so, you'll need a laptop. If not, you can buy a desktop machine and get more bang for your buck.

2. What is my budget?
If you only have $500 to spend on a new Mac, your choice is made for you because a Mac mini is all you can afford. If you're in the $1000 range, you can look at Mac minis and the MacBook Air. If money is no object, you can obviously buy any Mac you'd like.

As a general rule, you probably do not want to buy the lowest priced model of any particular Mac. Many times Apple has equipped the lowest priced models with vastly inferior processors, RAM, storage, or graphics cards, and a consumer would be well-advised to spend $200-$300 more for a vastly better computer and computing experience.

3. What do I want to do with my Mac?
This can be a much trickier question to answer than one might think. Apple is adept at creating new hardware and software (think iPod or iPad for example) that nobody knows they want until they actually try it. You might be think, "I just need something for email and word processing" and later be surprised to discover that digital photography is so fun and easy that you want to do that too. Make a point of experiencing and exploring the different things the Mac can do before you buy.

After resolving the above questions, clients of MacAtoZ are welcome to contact us at 503-507-0410 or support@macatoz.com for answers to any specific questions. We delight in helping people find the right Mac for them and are happy to offer our expertise in this area to members of our client base.

To be clear, MacAtoZ is not a sales-driven organization. While we can procure Apple products for clients (and typically receive a small commission in the process), we are just as happy to send people to Apple Bridgeport Village—the closest official Apple retail store to Salem—or to Apple.com. Because we don't much (or sometimes any) money through sales, we can offer impartial purchasing advice. You will never find us trying to upset you anything.
