Migrating AppleWorks word processing documents

Apple hasn't supported their productivity suite AppleWorks in more than a decade, but that doesn't mean that previous users don't have old AppleWorks files (.cwk) on their Macs. If you created a word processing file in AppleWorks some years ago, it seems perfectly reasonable that you might at some point want to open it again.

Since AppleWorks no longer runs, you can't do that without a workaround.

For awhile, one option was to open AppleWorks word processing documents in Pages '09 or earlier. The document would automatically convert to Pages and could be saved in the Pages file format for future use. Unfortunately, the latest version of Pages no longer support AppleWorks at all.

Now the answer is to use the free LibreOffice which does support AppleWorks conversion to Word (.doc) format. Since Word can be read by virtually any word processor (including Pages), old AppleWorks word processing documents have a path into the future.
